Users Stopping Slimming Injections Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing these treatments should be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to original weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the jabs report a intense return of cravings.

"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural changes.
